6.5 Inch Seven-Segment Clock

Postby Electrons-R-Fun » Tue Mar 22, 2016 7:48 pm

Hi all,

I've started building a new clock for Lisa because her eyesight continues to get worse and she always likes to know what time it is. The new clock is also about incorporating some things I've learned doing in electronics over a few years and also about learning a new subject... Binary.

I will use the Propeller as the foundation for the project. I will also use the 4511 (a 7-segment driver) and possibly drive each of the 4511 with a cog from the propeller. I am not sure about this approach and may change over to using a 4029 (decade up down counter) along with the 4511 IC.

Some of the features the clock will have are; buttons that allow the 7 segments to be set by counting up or down, be within 3 second accuracy per day, display the day of the week, display time in 12 hour mode, have a running second clock, and be very visible.

The new clock is to over come some of the limitations of my first clock, which used 4017 (decade counters) to control the clock. My first clock has worked for years and is still going strong, but it has a few quirks I know enough now to eliminate.

Here is the video of the start of the clock project.

The parts are in. I will bread board things together slowly and try to get them all working together.

Can you post the digits and where you got them? I have some large digits that came from China many years ago, but no specs and mixed colors. Looking for Common-Anode type.

Yes, that was it...of course, at $14.95 per digit my project design is starting to look a might expensive. :(

That should do the trick to let her see the time. Ever thought of having it talk and say the time?

Couldn't you make a larger display using smaller leds and something such as beveled plastic to give the effect of larger led bar? Don't they call that light refracting or something like that?

Joe,

I haven't been very impressed with the results of displays that work like that. These displays look pretty nice. I just need 5 for a project. 20 if I was to do it right.
